Course Information

Age Group: Upper Primary, Secondary, Tertiary, Adults

Stop motion is an animated filmmaking technique in which objects are physically manipulated in small increments between individually photographed frames so that they will appear to exhibit independent motion or change when the series of frames is played back. Any kind of object can thus be animated – Puppets with movable joints (puppet animation) or plasticine figures (clay animation or claymation) are most commonly used. Puppets, models, lego or clay figures built around an armature are used in model animation. Stop motion of flat materials such as paper, fabrics or photographs is usually called Cut-out animation. Combination of paper and clay animation are often used too.

Through active experimentation, students will learn about:

• Pre-production (Scription, camera angles and shots, storyboarding)

• Production (lighting, animation)

• Post-production (Video editing, subtitling and music)

• Character conceptualization and design and props design

• Experimenting with different/mixed media for animation objects

• Theory and practical of object animation

Students will be guided to stop motion animation techniques through various designing and character creation techniques. They will also be able to understand the concept, techniques and ability to convey their ideas in the form of animated graphics. Each lesson will be accompanied with 1-2 videos and notes.
