Education and Career in Music – My Journey

LESSON OVERVIEW

How can someone pursue an education and career in music regardless of family background? Jia Hua will share about his journey through music, from picking up and learning music through school programmes, to pursuing professional training at the NUS Yong Siew Toh Conservatory of Music and subsequently making a career in the arts industry.

Jia Hua discovered his passion for music through the MOE school bands CCA system. He later joined the Singapore Youth Orchestra (now known as the Singapore National Youth Orchestra) as a trumpet player and began freelancing with the Singapore Symphony Orchestra during his national service. He is a member of the pioneer batch of graduates from the Yong Siew Toh Conservatory of Music (NUS), and has worked extensively in the government, freelance and education sectors of the arts industry. In 2013, he founded the Metropolitan Festival Orchestra, Singapore first fully-independent professional orchestra.
